Messages: It has been so wonderful getting to know all of your students over the past two weeks, and I look forward to meeting all of you at curriculum night this Tuesday. As we begin this third grade journey together, please know that I believe strongly in open and frequent communication between parents and teachers. Reminders: There are still a few students who have not turned in money for our planners and classroom dues. If you have not done so already, and are able to, please send in the $13.25 as soon as possible. Cash and checks are both accepted. If you would like to verify that your child has already turned in the money, please send me an e-mail.

Technology at home: As you may know, computers are one of the many tools we use as part of the Ignite program. As such, there may be a time when homework is assigned that requires the use of the computer. If your child does not have access to a computer at home, please let me know as soon as possible so that appropriate arrangements or alternatives can be planned.

Reading Logs: Please make sure your child is reading a minimum of 100 minutes each week and that the reading log is filled in after each nightly reading session. The reading log is now electronic and located on our wiki at For each date on the calendar for the month, students should enter the book title, author, and minutes read.

Math: We are currently in the middle of unit one. This unit is predominately a review of concepts presented in previous grades. The topics explored so far include number sequencing, number grids, equivalent names, probability, and time to the half and quarter hours. In the coming weeks, we will work on finding differences, word problems with money, and patterns.

Reading: We began our year by setting up our regular reading routine. We have come up with rules for selecting a book, how to discuss our reading effectively, as well as ways to think about our reading. Time was also spent working on building our stamina while reading a self-selected text. Students also spent time pondering the idea that “real” reading is thinking. Students thought about the ways they think as they read. This revealed strategies such as prediction, visualization, connections, etc. As the year continues, we will spend more time using and understanding these strategies. You will see the strategies in use as students add to their weekly reader’s responses. These will begin in a few weeks.

During this upcoming week, we will continue our study of metacognition along with a genre study of poetry. Additionally, we will spend time developing strategies for answering text-specific questions.

The class has also taken the first STAR reading test of the year. Your child’s reading range will be shared with him/her this week. Students should use this range to help them select appropriate books. Their reading range is also used as one of several tools to help me to discern your child’s current reading comprehension level. In addition, these results will assist me in making informed decisions regarding lessons and activities to best meet your child’s needs. Social Studies: Our first study this year is in the area of geography. We “blasted off” into space and are now trying to find our way back home. In order to do this, we will first have to learn how to identify the hemispheres, continents, oceans, countries, and states. It has been an exciting adventure so far! As our geography study continues, we will begin to examine the specific geography of Michigan.
